When you focus, your surroundings begin to fade. Everything else begins to absorb into that point of singularity.
That's why when you focus on big dreams, little things become easier. But there are some things literally larger than life.
Those who want to succeed in both this life and the next focus on the next life. They don't let worldly anxieties get the best of them because they focus on the Hereafter. And by focusing on that, they get this world as well.
You have to focus on the next life in order to obtain any good at all. Otherwise, you will be following a mirage of this life that will lead to nothing but torment. By focusing on the next life, you take in the reward of this life and the next.
"Whoever desires the quick-passing (transitory enjoyment of this world), We readily grant him what We will for whom We like. Then, afterwards, We have appointed for him Hell; he will burn therein disgraced and rejected. And whoever desires the Hereafter and strives for it, with the necessary effort due for it while he is a believer - then such are the ones whose striving shall be appreciated. On each - these as well as those - We bestow from the bounties of your Lord. And the bounties of your Lord can never be forbidden. See how We prefer one above another, and verily, the Hereafter will be greater in degrees and greater in intricacy." (Qu'ran 17:18-21)
Some focus on school. Others focus on work. Others still focus on self-improvement. Even better is focusing on the Hereafter. And finally the greatest focus is that of Allah. Focusing on Allah by remembrance of Him will give you peace, tranquility, righteousness, and should give you fear.
"Indeed, in the Remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest" (Qu'ran 13:28)
One of the best ways to focus on Allah and the Hereafter is prayer. Through prayer, one bows, stands, prostrates, and sits in worship of Allah. He is focusing on the next life while in this one. He knows he hasn't reached his goal yet, but he's toiling through prayer towards his ultimate goal in the Hereafter.
Sometimes a Muslim focuses on prayer and then forgets when he is done. His focus leaves the next life and returns to this transient one. The companions of Prophet Muhammad (SWS) had that problem, but the prophet reassured them by telling them focus doesn't have to be in the next life all the time, because there is a time for this and a time for that.
Perhaps the strongest degree of focus in prayer is reaching God consciousness. That is when one imagines that Allah is before him, and if he cannot attain that, the Prophet Muhammad (SWS) said to imagine that He is seeing you. Through doing that, you reach high focus.
In fact, this is being aware of Allah. And it's not just urged to be conscious of Him during prayer, but wherever you are. That is the definition of the comprehensive term "taqwa". That is, piety, being God-fearing, and being God-conscious.
"Be conscious of Allah wherever you are. Follow the bad deed with a good one to erase it, and engage others with beautiful character." -Prophet Muhammad (SWS)
Being aware of Allah wherever you are will make you strong in faith, a.k.a. iman. You begin to stop delving into the sinful and unknown, and you don't let curiosity get the best of you. Your focus is so high that you think about what a certain action (whether it be speaking words, walking to a place, using the computer) will be pleasing to Allah or displeasing. That is what I call your point of singularity. It's the point you focus on and everything else follows afterwards.
How does this work? Well if you think about what will displease and please Allah all the time, everything else will follow. Your actions will follow what He wants you to follow, your words will speak what He wants you to speak, and your lifestyle will follow the way it should always be.
Thinking about how Allah's pleasure or displeasure will be depending on your circumstance makes you God conscious. You will rethink going to the nightclub. You will remember that Allah is watching you when you're alone at night, and you are aware that your actions will be counted against you or for you. You will avoid visiting sinful places and doing sinful things. You will hold your tongue when you want to backbite because of the vast reward that is left for those who restrain their anger.
And once you reach this level of focus in your religion, you can reach a level where Allah loves you to a degree where He becomes your very hearing, sight, hands, and feet. That is where you've reached the point of singularity.
The Prophet Muhammad (SWS) said that Allah (SWT) said:
"Whosoever shows enmity to someone devoted to Me, I shall be at war with him.
"My servant draws not near to Me with anything more loved by Me than the religious duties I have enjoined upon him, and My servant continues to draw near to Me with supererogatory works so that I shall love him.
"When I love him I am his hearing with which he hears, his seeing with which he sees, his hand with which he strikes and his foot with which he walks.
"Were he to ask [something] of Me, I would surely give it to him, and were he to ask Me for refuge, I would surely grant him it. I do not hesitate about anything as much as I hesitate about [seizing] the soul of My faithful servant: he hates death and I hate hurting him."
The person had done a magnitude of extra voluntary good deeds to the point that his reliance on Allah had reached that of completion, where he hears that which Allah wants him to hear, sees what Allah wants him to see, and fights against which Allah wants him to fight against and walk to what He wants him to walk to.
That is what true focus is. What is your focus? Is it the temporal goals of this world? Is it trying to derive pleasure from it when it is to fade one day with the onset of death? Or is it something literally larger than life? Or is it Heaven? Or is it Allah's (SWT) pleasure?
Once you have taqwa, none of this world will matter. But everything else will follow. Make your point of singularity Allah (SWT), and everything, this world and the next will follow. And you will ultimately be happy.
Wait until the decision of your Lord comes. It is then that you will be satisfied, only if you were seeking for His pleasure. As for not caring about it, that's another story. Either way you will one day see the reality of it all.
“And be patient for the decision of your Lord, for indeed you are in Our eyes.” (Qu'ran 52:48)
