People who experience certain things that others don’t experience are those who experience life subjectively. It is unique through their pair of eyes. But the truth is never subjective. Truth is objective; as in, it never changes. It isn’t based on your own opinion, you can’t cherry-pick whatever you like in order to fit your liking. That is following what is called in an illusion.
An illusion is something perceptive by you but not in accordance with the truth. For example, you may perceive, with the mindset of Adolf Hitler, that the Aryan race is superior to all other races. That is subjective to you. But that is an illusion. It is an illusion because what is true is that everyone has similar bodily compositions, a brain, a heart, and everything that makes a person like another person. The objective truth is that no person has any dominance over any other.
“All mankind is from Adam and Eve, an Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab nor a non-Arab has any superiority over an Arab; also a white has no superiority over black nor a black has any superiority over white except by piety and good action. Learn that every Muslim is a brother to every Muslim and that the Muslims constitute one brotherhood. Nothing shall be legitimate to a Muslim which belongs to a fellow Muslim unless it was given freely and willingly. Do not, therefore, do injustice to yourselves.” –Prophet Muhammad (SWS)
Let’s take this a step further. Let’s talk about something called faith. Faith can be blind; conversely, it can be the only truth. And there is one faith that is completely objective. That is Islam.
To you, the murder of an innocent may be nothing but an ordinary occurrence. In truth, though, you are viewing an illusion. At the end of that mirage you will find no water, and no hope, because you don’t realize the truth. And the truth is that “…if any one slew a person - unless it be for murder or for spreading mischief in the land - it would be as if he slew the whole people: and if any one saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of the whole people.” (Qu’ran 5:32) That is the objective truth, independent of one’s illusion that murdering an innocent is not a big deal, as is done in wartime by many, including America. Killing an innocent child is nothing for them, yet feign do they realize that it is like they follow an illusion, never to reach their destination.
The same goes for any sin. In the religion of Islam, sins are viewed very heavily by the believer, and very lightly by the disbeliever. There are certain things, even the perceptively smallest things, that are great in the sight of Allah. This includes backbiting, getting angry, committing adultery, etc. But we can even go steps further. To break the illusion, you must read the Qu’ran. And you must read the prophetic sayings of the Prophet Muhammad (SWS), forbidding us evil, and enjoining us good.
“If the believer commits a sin, when he sins he believes it’s as he is sitting under a mountain and the mountain is about to fall and crush the believer. That’s the believer. As the evil person, if he sins, he sees it as a fly passing his nose. Because he loves this world.” – Prophet Muhammad (SWS)
And you will realize the things you previously took so lightly are not so light anymore. The illusion fades, and you are left in a desert of hopelessness because you took the sin so lightly. But don’t despair. Ask Allah for forgiveness and God-willing you can be taken out of your hopelessness, and be brought back into civilization. You can get life back into your body.
Let’s take the example of music and animate pictures as an example. These are controversial topics in Islam because these things are small in the sight of the disbeliever, but they are in fact sins in Islam. Many people, out of stubbornness, might not want to give these things up because of the illusions that society has fed them. And that is the illusion that you cannot live without music or pictures or movies. But society has strayed so far from the path of objective truth, it is leading millions into a mirage that will leave them stranded forever.
The illusion tricks you. Just like this world. What is the world but temporary amusement and play?
"Know that the life of this world is only play and amusement, pomp and mutual boasting among you, and rivalry in respect of wealth and children. (It is) like a rain (Ghayth), thereof the growth is pleasing to the tiller; afterwards it dries up and you see it turning yellow; then it becomes straw. But in the Hereafter (there is) a severe torment, and (there is) forgiveness from Allah and (His) pleasure. And the life of this world is only a deceiving enjoyment." (Qu’ran 57:20)
Following your desires is another way of following your subjective illusions. You are following the footsteps of Satan by following whatever you wish that isn’t pleasing to Allah.
“Satan makes them promises, and creates in them false desires; but Satan's promises are nothing but deception.” (Qu’ran 4:117-120)
All that Satan is doing is making your deeds seem pleasing to you. He’s leading you to a place that will leave you helpless and weak. It might seem pleasing to you, but in fact, that in itself is his great illusion. He’s leading you to destruction, while Allah wants to forgive you, always.
“Satan has made their deeds seem pleasing in their eyes.” (Qu’ran an-Naml, 24)
You need to always check the reality of your situation. Is it objective truth that will always exist and never change? Or is it unique to you and is not real? It doesn’t matter how many people might follow the illusion; it’s an illusion nonetheless.
Don’t follow your desires vainly. Don’t give into the mirages of this world. Don’t lie to yourself while you know the truth.
“God does not hesitate to set forth parables of anything even a gnat. The believers know that it is the truth from their Lord, but those who deny the truth say, "What does God mean by such parables?" In fact, by such parables God misleads and guides many. However, He only misleads the evil doers” (2:26)
The world is nice and pleasing to your desires, but it is fake. It is ephemeral, transient, temporary; and the ultimate illusion.
"This world is sweet and green and Allah Almighty has appointed you vice-regents in it, so pay attention to what you do. Be fearful of this world and be fearful of women." –Prophet Muhammad (SWS)
This life is the greatest illusion of all, but moreover a test. And you must pass the tests of this life to break the illusion. Break the illusion and find the oasis in the middle of desert; the oasis of eternity. Don’t be a disbeliever who thinks he is doing well in this life, and ends up finding the oasis was but a mirage, and he has lost out forever.
"But the deeds of those who disbelieve are like a mirage in a desert: the thirsty person thinks there will be water but, when he gets there, he finds only Allah, who pays him his account in full - Allah is swift in reckoning." (Qur'an 24:39)
